Slip slop slap

Sun protection tips include: Slip on a T-shirt, slop on some suncream, slap on a hat.

Here comes the sun. The sun is a primary source of heat in nature. Heraclitus commented, “…all things are exchanged for fire and fire for all things, as good are exchanged for gold and gold is exchanged for goods.”

IMPORTANT SUN TIPS

When it comes to the sun, it’s best to follow the ancient Greeks’ advice about doing everything in moderation. Too much exposure is bad for the skin, but the body needs sunlight to make Vitamin D, which is vital for maintaining strong, healthy bones. And, a golden tan is one of summer’s natural beauty enhancers.

  • Treat the sun with respect! Use sunscreen 365 days a year, whether you’re in town or countryside, even when it is cloudy.
  • Check the moles on your body regularly. If you notice a difference in behaviour, colour, shape, size, outline or texture, visit your doctor immediately. You should do the same, when a mole is bleeding or itchy.
  • During the summer, when exposed to sunlight, wear a hat & sunglasses. Remember that staying in the shade does not protect you from the sun.
  • When sunbathing, avoid exposure between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Minimise your exposure during other hours.
  • Renew your sunscreen every two hours and always after swimming or playing sports.
  • Do not use products that appear to have undergone changes in packaging or have been exposed to high temperatures, especially when displayed outdoors.
  • Apply your sunscreen half an hour before you go in the sun.
  • Make sure young children are not exposed to the sun without sunscreen, hat, sunglasses and a light-coloured shirt that covers their body. Do not forget to put sunscreen on nose and ears.
  • Infants younger than 6 months should not be exposed to the sun.
  • Do not use the sunscreen product you bought last year, if it hasn’t been kept in appropriate conditions. Check the expiry date and the period during which the sunscreen keeps its protective properties after opening (PAO).
