9 Cretan businesses honoured for organic cuisine

The award ceremony for ‘Bio Kouzina 2012’ was held on 27 September at the Agreco Traditional Farm near Rethymno, Crete. Nine Cretan restaurants including the Agreco Farm were certified for using predominantly organic products in their food preparation.

The ‘Bio Kouzina’ seal certifies the use of organic products in food service companies including restaurants, tavernas, hotels. Issued by BIOhellas in collaboration with catering specialists, it is the first and only Greek certification and is widely acknowledged by foreign organizations.

The Agreco Farm was chosen as the venue for the event as the estate, owned by Nikos Daskalantonakis, has pioneered organic agriculture and provides organic supplies to the Grecotel hotels in Crete for the last 17 years. The Agreco Farm products are widely available in the hotels and shops making them popular with local and international visitors.

In a welcoming speech, Mr. D. M. Kalaitzidakis, Director of Operations at Grecotel S.A., said: “Nikos Daskalantonakis’ first goal was to create quality in the Grecotel hotels. However his vision was always to offer something ‘unique’ to his guests and considered the hotels as an extension of hospitality in his home. The Agreco estate is more than just a magical setting for events, it’s a property with a soul. ”

The chefs at the Agreco Farm create culinary experiences from fresh organic produce, traditional Cretan recipes combined with love and respect. Guests, young and old, are able to participate in activities of the estate that vary with the season.

11:00 – 22:00 for visits. Kafenion serves Greek coffee, meze, raki, wine, beer and soft drinks

18:30 hrs Tuesday to Saturday. Daily Farm Tour followed by a Cretan Feast in the Agreco Taverna.

Sunday:   Guests can enjoy a ‘hands on’ experience by helping with seasonal work on the farm – from shearing the sheep & goats, harvesting the wheat, treading the grapes, making raki, collecting the olives and making olive oil. The Cretan people, always looking for a reason to celebrate, organize harvest festival lunches on these days.
