AGRECO, The Best Organic Restaurant in the World

The AGRECO farm

Delving deep into Cretan tradition, Agreco, a fairytale traditional farm, has revived centuries-old organic farming practices in a unique expression of Greek philoxenia’, or hospitality. On a hill near Rethymnon with vine yards and olive trees overlooking the infinite sea, don’t miss a culinary experience, tasting diverse seasonal dishes based on the fruits of the land and the legendary nutritional Cretan cuisine.

Agreco was created by Nikos Daskalantonakis, founder of Greece’s largest hotel chain, Grecotel, as part of his vision of offering guests wholesome, farm-fresh produce while supporting sustainable development of rural areas. Shaped by hand, every stone at Agreco preserves the delicate balance between man and nature. The farm and its buildings, typical of 17th century Cretan and Venetian architecture, stand in perfect harmony with the landscape. They include an olive oil press, a watermill, a threshing area, a wood-burning oven, a wine & raki distillery, a general store, a dairy, a chapel, guesthouses, workshops, a tavern, a vegetable garden, a lake, a mini-zoo and natural water-cleaning. Crete is blessed with a climate that intensifies flavors in fruits and vegetables grown on the island. Warm winds from the Sahara and cool, Alpine conditions in the mountains nurture a dizzying variety of crops, with each season bringing something new. Agreco is all about vegetables; perfectly ripened tomatoes bursting with flavor, fresh scallions, baby courgettes, silky aubergines, tender lettuce, cool cucumbers, prickly artichokes, exotic avocados and crunchy carrots. In summer, Crete is a rainbow of color as the astonishing variety of fruit that flourishes on the island ripens and fills the air with its light perfume. Melons poke out from beneath green foliage, while peach trees droop under the weight of the round, pale orange fruit. Following Cretan tradition, a selection of fruit is grown at Agreco – strawberries, peaches, pomegranates, quinces, apricots, pears, prickly pears, grapes, medlars, mulberries, oranges, citrons, tangerines, lemons, and kumquat – providing fresh fruit almost year-round as each season brings something new.

AGRECO, BEST ORGANIC RESTAURANT 2009

Agreco farm, Grecotel’s traditional farm, has been awarded as the “Best Organic Restaurant for 2009” from the Vanity Fair, leading UK magazine. In this family-owned farm, everyday activities like land-cultivation, goat milking and food  production, are a  way  of living.  Everything  grown on Agreco’s farm ends up in the kitchen, where handmade traditional, strictly organic, dishes are prepared.
